Blog 2 (5/21)
Today marks the end of my first half-week working at SPIRE. These first few days have been even more captivating than I initially expected. I spend the first two days learning more about the campus, meeting the staff, and getting an understanding of what Mr. Orloff does for his work. I got to sit in on some interesting meetings from the jump. SPIRE has set programs in basketball, swimming, and track. I was able to sit in on the bi-weekly meetings that they have for these programs and understand more about how these programs are run. On Thursday, I was assigned my first individual task, doing some additional research on the Aurora Games. The Aurora games are an event the SPIRE will host in 2022 that is focused on highlighting women in sports. Mr. Orloff had me do some work and research on how I think they could make the event better. He said that my younger perspective could be interesting and helpful in giving input on how to run the event. I took note of some of the problems that I thought I saw with the initial presentation on the event, and I also did some research on potential people to come in and speak for the seminars that will be hosted. Val Ackerman was one potential individual who I pointed out as she was the first commissioner of the WNBA, and also has ties to SPIRE as she is now the commissioner of the Big East which hosts events here. I also pointed out Renee Montgomery who is a co-owner of the Atlanta Dream and is an activist for both African-Americans and women in the sporting world. I have overall really enjoyed my first week working here and already have plans for how I can get more involved in my second week.
